(Frankfurt a. M., 20.02.2025) The German Society for Biomedical Engineering within VDE is starting the 2025 to 2027 term of office with a new Board of Directors. The aim is to set the right course for future-proof healthcare together with politics, industry and science. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karsten Seidl was confirmed as Chairman of the Board at the constituent meeting at the end of January. Seidl has headed the Health business unit at the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems (IMS) since 2018 and is Professor of Micro- and Nanosystems for Medical Technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Christian O. Erbe, Managing Director of Erbe Elektromedizin GmbH, will also remain in office as Deputy Chairman. PD Dr. Verena Scheper from the Hannover Medical School was newly elected to the Board and elected Deputy Chair for the first time.
Full power for innovation strategy and digitalization
The VDE DGBMT Board has identified innovation, digitalization and the political framework conditions for biomedical technology as key topics for the coming years. In order to strengthen the industry's innovative power, a new position paper was published in January with demands on politicians. Firstly, the Executive Board is advocating the formation of a cross-departmental task force. It should develop a coherent innovation strategy and interlink the areas of research, education, health and business more closely. Secondly, the experts recommend significantly accelerating digitalization in healthcare. Prof. Karsten Seidl comments: “Relevant health data must be available in the right place and at the right time. Especially in conjunction with medical devices, digitalization offers great potential for more efficient, patient-oriented care.”
