Battery Pass Consortium Publishes Technical Guidance and Software Demonstrator For EU Battery Passport

The Battery Pass Consortium has achieved their next milestone in process to implementing the battery passport. This technical guidance is being released for the first time, with the demonstrator for the EU Battery Passport. It provides a framework and various recommendations for the technical implementation of the battery passport, that is coming into force on in February 2027 as part of the EU Battery Regulation. The demonstrator assists with the guidelines' technical approaches, that have been verified and implemented as examples.

The Battery Pass Consortium is co-funded by the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and is composed of 11 leading international technology, industry and scientific organisations, including VDE Renewables.

The EU Battery Pass is a proposed digital certificate system that would allow consumers to verify the sustainability and environmental impact of batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs) and other applications.

The idea behind the EU Battery Pass is to provide a standardized, transparent way of assessing the environmental impact of batteries, which can be complex and difficult for consumers to evaluate on their own. The pass would include information such as the battery's carbon footprint, the materials used in its production, and how it was recycled at the end of its life.

The EU Battery Pass is part of a larger initiative by the European Union to promote the development of a sustainable battery industry. The EU is investing heavily in battery research and development and has set ambitious targets for the production of EVs and the reduction of carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
