Pioneering Insights for Energy Storage Solutions at the SNEC ES+ Expo in Shanghai

VDE, together with our technology and laboratory partner CAICT (a Chinese government organization), and the SNEC organization, brought together 35 decision-makers and leading experts from the Chinese battery and energy storage sector at a round table side event.

Jia Jun from CAICT Beijing and Burkhard Holder of VDE co-moderated the round table event, discussing the current challenges of established technologies and exploring new approaches to enhance safety, advance standards and pre-standards, and meet sustainability criteria.

Where is the industry heading? Which ideas are mere hype? What technologies will play a role in the market in the next five years, both technologically and economically? "The statements from industry representatives provided us with impressive insights into the ongoing development activities and challenges of the battery sector" said Mr. Holder.

VDE's battery manager Patrick Zank worked with the participants to evaluate the numerous technologies, and by the end, they had developed a comprehensive picture of which areas, in the short and medium term, will impact international markets and in which volumes. Participants agreed that of the more than 20 technologies, solid-state and sodium-ion batteries will likely play an increasingly important role.

The essential synergy between battery and hydrogen storage systems was also discussed. There are numerous and rapidly growing activities with successfully operating integrated systems in China. They saw impressive, technically advanced solutions on display at the two leading trade fairs in Shanghai, where batteries are used for short-term storage and hydrogen for longer-term storage.

Overall, the round table event provided a highly engaging dialogue with great openness and many new impulses for VDE's work. VDE and CAICT are now better positioned to align the roadmap for developing standards and testing procedures with the industry's expected developments.

SNEC ES+ Financial Summit

Financial Summit for Energy Storage: Bridging industry, investors, insurance

Due to the VDE presence at the SNEC ES+ and the long-standing cooperation, the SNEC management asked Mr. Holder to take over the chairmanship of the Financial Summit for Energy Storage. 250 Participants from industry, the investment sector, insurance companies and experts from the field of market intelligence attended this first event.

The keynotes and the concluding panel addressed the current challenges of storage technologies, the requirements still to be met from the banking and insurance sectors and safety issues as well as gaps in the standards. To mitigate some of the current challenges, VDE can offer its approach for the timely development of pre-standards and supply chain services which increase the quality of products in the long term.

Guidance and training for the Chinese battery and ESS industry on the upcoming EU battery regulations is also of particular importance. This also includes expected criteria for the sustainability and traceability of products, especially ESG criteria.
